ABOUT LEE'S UNLEADED BLUES

South Side Hot Spot for Blues

Lee’s Unleaded Blues Club has its roots in Queen Bee’s Lounge, a beloved venue that thrived on Chicago’s South Side during the 1960s and 1970s. Founded and operated by Effie "Queen Bee" Rolfe, the lounge was a vibrant gathering place for live music, dancing, and community connection. Its reputation as a cornerstone of the neighborhood’s cultural scene laid the groundwork for the venue’s lasting legacy.

In 1983, the club was transformed by its new owners, Ray and Leola “Lee” Grey, into what we now know as Lee’s Unleaded Blues. With their passion for the blues and a vision to honor Chicago’s musical heritage, the Greys reimagined the space while preserving its spirit. Lee’s quickly became synonymous with authentic, soul-stirring blues and a haven for artists and fans alike.

For decades, Lee’s Unleaded Blues has been a proving ground for emerging talent and a cherished stage for blues greats. Iconic artists such as Junior Wells, Magic Slim, and Koko Taylor have graced its stage, alongside countless local musicians who have carried on the tradition. The intimate setting and electric atmosphere make every performance at Lee’s unforgettable.

Through the years, Lee’s has weathered challenges while remaining true to its mission: to keep the blues alive. Recent renovations have modernized the club while honoring its rich history, ensuring that Lee’s continues to be a vital part of Chicago’s cultural landscape. The neon lights, legendary stage, and warm atmosphere remain as iconic as ever.
